Darjeeling Tea

Darjeeling tea is a tea obtained from Darjeeling district of West Bengal , India . This tea is available in black, green, white and ulo form. When brewed well, it produces a thin-bodied, light-colored infusion with a floral aroma. The taste may include a group of astringent tannic features and a fleshy spiciness sometimes described as a “muskel”.

What Is Darjeeling Tea?

Darjeeling tea is made from various types of tea plant Camellia sinensis. It is a thin, light colored tea with a mild aroma. The tea plant, like most plants, undergoes periods of growth and lethargy. Each flush is a period that begins when the tea plant grows new leaves and ends when those leaves are harvested. Darjeeling tea has three major flushes. The first flush is from mid-March to May, the second flush is from June to mid-August, and the third flush (also known as autumn flush) is from October to November.

There are two minor flushes as well. A flush occurs between the first and the second flush in between two weeks. A rain / monsoon flush occurs between the second and third flushes during the month of September.

Since it is based on all weather patterns, the time period is not fixed and both seasons in Darjeeling and are dependent on the specific location of the property. More rainfall than the first may increase the length of the rain flush by a few weeks, shortening the time period of the second flush and vice versa.

Different flushes will give different results in taste, color and aroma. As a tea fermenter, flavonols in tea leaves combine with oxygen in the air. It is this process that distinguishes the black, oolong and green tea varieties. Darjeeling black tea has undergone complete fermentation, boils are semi-fermented, and Darjeeling’s green tea is not fermented.

Purchase and storage
Darjeeling tea can be purchased loosely or in tea bags from better grocery stores, coffee / tea shops or online retailers. Darjeeling tea is very fragrant, but they will lose their aroma when exposed to air for a long time. They are particularly sensitive to moist air, direct sunlight, heat and strong odors, so it is best to store the tea in a sealed container in a dark pantry. Tea is best consumed within two years of harvesting.

Types of Darjeeling Tea


Three main flushes and two additional flushes will produce different types of Darjeeling tea.

Darjeeling First Flush Tea: The first tea harvested in the spring after the lethargy of winter. The color of the tea is light and clear. Tea leaves have a floral scent that is shiny and different. First flush teas are generally more expensive than other flushes, due to their freshness and color.
